Multi-degree ROADM based on wavelength selective switches: Architectures and scalability

چکیده
Multi-degree implementations of the reconfigurable optical add–drop multiplexer (ROADM) are analyzed in terms of in-band crosstalk performance with an emphasis on the reduction in the number of wavelength selective switches used in the module. It is shown experimentally that an 8-degree ROADM using the wavelength selective switches for channel adding and optical splitters for channel dropping performs closely to one that uses switches for both operations. A new modular architecture based on the wavelength selective switches is proposed for implementations applicable to large degree nodes. Performance analysis of this architecture indicates node scalability to 256 degree with crosstalk-induced power penalties below 0.5 dB. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silicon-based Low-Power Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM)
We demonstrate a 1×4 coarse wavelength division-multiplexing (CWDM) planar concave grating multiplexer/demultiplexer and its application in re-configurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) system in silicon-on-insulator substrate. The wavelengths of the demonstrated concave grating multiplexer align well with the ITU-T standard. We demonstrate a prototype of ROADM comprising two such concav...

Most new network builds and major upgrades in recent years have been focused on building dynamic reconfigurable optical layers to support the explosive growth in IP traffic. These advanced optical layers include Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) devices allowing network operators to dynamically configure the wavelengths to be added and dropped at each network node, thus increa...
متن کاملRouting Capability and Blocking Analysis of Dynamic ROADM Optical Networks (Category - II) for Dynamic Traffic
Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) can be classified into three categories based on their underlying switching technologies. Category I consists of a single large optical switch; category II is composed of a number of small optical switches aligned in parallel; and category III has a single optical switch and only one wavelength being added/dropped. In this paper, to evaluate...

Optical packet/burst switches can be scaled to high port counts using multi-stage architectures. To reduce the number of switching elements in SOA-based broadcast-and-select architectures, we deploy only a few stages while exploiting the WDM dimension.

Constructing multi-Terabit switches and routers entirely out of electronic cross-bars require multiple racks of switches and huge number of interconnects. The cost and power consumption of such a system is very high and has a limited scalability. The all-optical switching has the problem of buffering and processing and the construction of multi-terabit switches and routers based on all-optical ...
